Every time someone gets behind the wheel after drinking or taking drugs, they take a gamble with lives.

During the summer months, Surrey sees an increase in drink and drug driving incidents linked to warmer weather, major sporting events, nights out and increased socialising. Young male drivers aged 20–34 remain disproportionately represented in local collision data, accounting for:

• 34% of alcohol-related collisions
• 49% of drug-related collisions

That’s why Surrey RoadSafe has re-launched the “Don’t Gamble on Drink/Drug Driving” campaign – challenging risky thinking and encouraging drivers to make safer choices before they get behind the wheel.

Many drivers convince themselves:

…“I’ve only had a couple.”

…“I can handle my drink.”

…“It’s only a short drive.”

…“I feel okay this morning.”

But alcohol and drugs affect:

• Reaction times

• Judgement

• Concentration

• Decision-making

And the consequences can be devastating.

You may still be over the limit the next morning – even if you:

• Slept for several hours
• Had coffee
• Showered
• Eaten breakfast

Only time removes alcohol from your system.

Drug Driving: Don’t Roll the Dice 🎲

Drug driving includes illegal drugs, prescription medication and recreational substances that impair your ability to drive safely.

Even if you “feel okay”, drugs can seriously affect:

• Coordination
