NPCC Seatbelt 2021

Whether a driver or a passenger in a vehicle, in a crash a seatbelt greatly improves your chance of avoiding serious injury or death. Using a three-point seatbelt (the standard type fitted to modern vehicles, with a strap across your lap and chest) reduces the chance of dying in a crash by 50% [2009 via Brake.org].

From 24th May to 13th June, Drive SMART will be raising awareness across our socials of the importance of wearing a seatbelt, and the statistics that support its inclusion within the Fatal Five priorities.

In the UK, wearing a seatbelt is a legal requirement if belts are fitted. Drivers are responsible for children under 14 being in a restraint appropriate to their age and height. Passengers aged 14 and above are legally responsible for their own belts. Drivers caught without a seat belt face on-the-spot fines of £100. If prosecuted, the maximum fine is £500.
