Fixed Enforcement Cameras in Surrey

As part of our Vision Zero road safety strategy, Surrey RoadSafe deploy safety cameras to areas identified as high risk. Safety cameras play an important role in our wider road safety strategy. Surrey RoadSafe utilise a variety of different types of road safety camera depending on the specific, learn more about them here.

Fixed Speed

Gatso

The GATSO Smart Pole Speed Camera uses radar to detect the speed of passing vehicles. The camera is activated when a vehicle crosses a radar beam at excessive speed.

Vector SR

The VECTOR SR spot speed device is a radar speed meter and video camera.

The device uses a radar to track vehicles through its beam and measure how fast a vehicle is travelling, the enforcement system is triggered when a vehicle is detected in both directions in excess of the speed limit.

Redspeed

The SpeedCurb device is a loop-based system which uses sensors embedded into to the road surface to calculate vehicle speeds.

Speed on Green

Redspeed

The Redspeed system uses a combination of red-light and speed enforcement technology to monitor speed when the traffic light signal displays green/amber and reverts to red-light enforcement when displaying a red light.

Vector SR

The Vector SR combined system uses radar to monitor vehicle position in relation to a stop-line at a traffic light junction, it also uses a camera to monitor the state of the traffic signal. The enforcement system will activate if the stop-line is crossed when the traffic signal is displaying a red light. When the traffic signal displays green/amber light, the system reverts to speed enforcement.

Redlight

Redspeed

The RedGuard system is configured to trigger when a vehicle crosses the stop line and continues through the junction after a red traffic light signal is displayed.

Vector SR

The Vector SR system uses a radar beam to monitor vehicle motion and position, relative to a stop-line. It also uses a camera to monitor and establish the state of the traffic signals at the junction. When the status of the lights change to the red stop signal, the system will detect any vehicle that crosses the stop line. This will trigger a violation record to be produced.

Variable Speed & Red-X

HADECS 3x stands for Highway Agency Digital Enforcement and Compliance System. The system aims to encourage compliance with mandatory variable speed limits and restricted Red-X.

The HADECS camera system uses an automatic digital camera and radar system to determine the speed of vehicles and detect vehicles travelling in a restricted Red-X lane.

Average Speed Cameras

SPECS-Vector, Speedspike & SafeZone are digital safety camera systems which calculate the average speed of a vehicle from the time it takes to pass between pairs of safety cameras. Average speed cameras work by reading vehicle number plates at the start and end point of a stretch of road. The average speed is calculated from the time taken to travel between the cameras.

These cameras are also used as a temporary measure during road works. This is to protect the workforce on-site and motorists passing through the roadworks.

Average speed cameras are always painted bright yellow and positioned to be visible, and the enforcement zones are always well signed with an “Average speed check” warning sign.

Mobile Speed Cameras

Mobile speed cameras are operated by highly trained enforcement officers, and deployed to areas of speed concern and a history of road traffic incidents. They can be found on dual carriageways, urban areas, near schools or residential with lower speed limits to ensure compliance and enhance safety.

Equipped with advanced and highly accurate speed measurement device to capture the speed of a passing vehicle within the lasers range up to 1,000 meters.

Mobile enforcement systems operate in both directions of travel. They do not require a flash to capture (record) a speeding vehicle at night.
